6 Questions to Ask Yourself When Buying a Sewing Machine
For those of you who may not know, I used to work in a sewing shop. Part of my job centered around helping clients find the right machines to suit their needs ranging from beginner to advanced as quilters, garment sewists, embroiderers, and crafters in general. More often than not, I would meet with those looking to start sewing for the first time - those who weren’t sure on which machines would suit their needs. That’s what this blog post is all about: Which questions are the right ones to ask yourself?
When it comes to any sewist, it really comes down to a couple of questions that my recommendation is based on:
What are you looking to use it for?
Garment Sewing: You can really use any style but you want to make sure it’s durable enough for the materials you’ll be sewing through. Some machines won’t get through thicker fabrics like multiple layers of denim. Wovens or Knits?
Quilting: You’ll want more space under the arm of your machine. You’ll need more space that you can feed your fabric through.
Embroidery: That’s a completely different beast than what a typical sewing machine can offer. You’ll need a machine dedicated to embroidery or a combination sewing/embroidery machine.
Repairs and Crafting: Again, depends on the projects but you can usually get away with more of a basic, simple style. What features do you want/need?
Needle threader? Push to stop/go? Embroidery capability? (and if so what size hoops, styles, software compatibility, stitches per minute, and more) Decorative stitches? Air threading? Accessories packages? The more you add on, the higher price point you can expect!
Do you want new? Or would you be interested in a refurbished machine?
This is a great option to utilize if you’re a bit tight on funds, looking to get started in sewing, or are hoping for an upgrade but just don’t feel comfortable spending the brand-new-in-the-box price tag!Are there any specific brands you’re interested in?
Babylock, Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna Viking, Janome, Juki, Kenmore, Pfaff, SingerEach brand handles differently and has different features. Which suit your needs? Don’t be afraid to give them a test run at your local dealer!
How often will you be using it?
If not often, you may want to save money and opt for a less expensive model. You’ll also have to watch out for when your machine needs maintenance checkups! Sew a ton, you’ll need to take it in more often (or DIY it yourself). Not very often? You still might have to take it in if it’s been sitting unused for a longer period of time! What is your preferred price range?
If you’re adamant on a specific price point, do yourself a favor and don’t look and the higher priced machines. If you have a bit of wiggle room, test out and research the features of potential machines to see that gives you the most bang for your buck! Your dealer is a great resource to help you find a model to suit your needs! Are you interested in financing?
