Pattern Review: Friday Pattern Avenir Jumpsuit
Can y’all tell yet that I love testing for Chelsea yet?
When I first started sewing indie patterns, Friday Pattern Company was one of the first brands that I found and wanted to try. The first patterns I ended up loving and wanting were the: Vernazza Two Piece, Adrienne Blouse, and, shocker, the Avenir. I was definitely bummed when I realized that I didn’t fit in with the size chart but I held out hope. Now we have it!
I went with this silky print that I found at Joann’s. At first, I was a bit hesitant because I wasn’t sure how it fickle it might be. However, I fell in love with the print, especially for my sister who loves all things astrology. While I was working with the material, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t nearly as slippery as I had anticipating it being! I loved the fabric even more the second that I threw the finished jumpsuit on and felt how soft, comfortable, and airy it feels.
The jumpsuit came together incredibly quickly! The only adjustments I made were: taking some length off the hem (a normal adjustment for my 5’3” frame) and changing the seam allowance on the pockets in order to make them a bit bigger.
The one part that I would say to take your time on would definitely be the waistband. Chelsea breaks this process down and really does a great job in the instructions on describing the step-by-step process. Just follow that and everything should come out just fine! The way I did it, however, was that I added an extra step and basted the casing to the bottom edge (one of the very few times I have ever basted) to secure it in place and made it that much easier for myself to pin the upper edge of the casing in the appropriate spots. I think this added step really helped with my fabric of choice since it helped to prevent shifting.
I love how wide the pants are and was happily surprised at how perfectly the length of the sleeves was. Since wide leg silhouettes are very much in again this season, this jumpsuit fits right in! I also appreciate the crotch curve as it’s long enough that it doesn’t pull at the top and the top length doesn’t pull at the pants, making this a bit friendlier to taller sewists as well! I used the recommended length of elastic for the neckline and, while it fits me perfectly over the shoulders, I might recommend including a bit more length if you’re looking to wear this piece off shoulder as well as it was just tight enough to slip back up and over my shoulders.
This is definitely a great pick for this month’s Sew a Jumpsuit Challenge and also lends itself to a wide range of occasions, all depending on the fabric you choose! Anyone else debating making a pajama version after reading Chelsea’s listing on the site?…
