Minerva: A Zadie Jumpsuit Hack
This post has been a long time coming!
Around 5 years ago I found and fell completely in love with a maxi dress I found at Torrid. It quickly became one of my favorite silhouettes to wear that somehow makes me look taller (because, hello, I’m short!). This dress is nothing but comfort and makes me feel my best any time I wear it! See below for the dress in question:
With all of the incredible buzz I’ve seen around the Zadie Jumpsuit since its release, I’ve been meaning to try the famous pattern myself. However, when I came across the fabric for my most recent Minerva make, I knew instantly that I had to make myself a maxi dress out of the stunning floral I had found. So I decided to combine the two!
Assembling the Zadie pattern was pretty straightforward! I tested the bodice before actually committing to it with a bit of bleached muslin I always have on-hand just to make sure the bodice would fit right and, once that muslin was finished and I saw it was going to fit perfectly, I set off to cut out everything in the final fabrics. When it came to the skirt, I simply took my measurements (well the width of the fabric by the length from waist-to-floor on the Torrid dress) and cut out those rectangles to sew and gather together. I also made sure to grab a second lining fabric from my stash (a lightweight knit) because I noticed that the stretch crepe was a bit too sheer that I couldn’t just wear it as-is!

I was so excited and in love with this dress as soon as I finished it that I couldn’t even wait to wear it out. With a cousin’s baby shower the next day, I threw on my new favorite dress and was so comfortable and proud to show it off before even taking photos in it (and, yes, I was freaking out and worrying the entire time that I would somehow ruin it). Thankfully, it came through unscathed!
I’ve actually been wearing this dress more frequently than the original dress of my dreams. With attending events, this dress has been the perfect way to keep my shoulders and arms covered a bit more for those special occasions (well the ones pre-Covid) that I have to be just a bit more covered for!
I love the neckline of this classic dress and cannot wait to be able to wear it even more once the world returns to a bit more social normalcy and I definitely can’t wait to make some more of these Zadie maxis In the future!
