With the start of the year in full-swing and everyone focusing on cleaning and reorganizing their spaces or starting new hobbies, I thought this would be the perfect time to share some of my favorite sewing room organizational must-haves! These necessities keep all of your sewing needs on display and organized so you’re not scrambling to find them when the time comes or even buying more because you’ve misplaced them. Below are 9 of my favorite organizational tools with everything from small storage to larger options. This is in no means an exhaustive list so make sure you comment with some of your favorite sewing space products and hacks below!
Bobbin Box Organizers
I’ll recommend these to anyone and everyone who will listen! Unlike bobbin rings, these little plastic bobbin boxes have foam inserts that keep the bobbin tails from flying all over the place and getting tangled up in each other. It’s an easier way to organize by color and you can even hang them from hooks if you want to keep them off of surfaces. I have 4 or 5 and add more when I get too many bobbins! Get them here!
Trim Catcher
If you’re like me, you might not have a basket or trim catcher attached to your serger. This pad and catcher is a perfect piece to set underneath your serger to keep your threads from slipping to the floor as often. This also helps keep your machine in place in case it has a habit of sliding around and protects your table or desk from damage. Get it here!
Sewing Machine Pad
I have to admit, I never would’ve thought I’d need one of these. After having an online friend make one for me, it’s become a necessity in my sewing space! Holding onto clips, pins, needles, and other smaller notions to keep within arms’ length, these sewing pads are perfect! Add the little waste bin with the first printed option for an easy clean-up solution or made sure you have some more pockets with the solid-colored alternative! Not to mention it also prevents scratches on my wooden desk! Get the printed option here! Or get the solid option here!
3-Tier Metal Rolling Cart
This was easily one of the best investments I’ve made. Having a space with limited storage space available, this has been a lifesaver to keep everything from my needles to elastics and even some printed patterns nearby! Thankfully, it doesn’t take up too much room and it’s nice enough that it doesn’t throw off any aesthetics you might have! These have become so popular in recent years that you can find them anywhere from Amazon to Michael’s or Joann’s in a wide array of your favorite colors! There’ve also been a few tutorials I’ve seen from other sewists on converting the top to be a mobile ironing board that’s another great way to utilize this space even more! Get it here!
Pegboard Set
This setup is a great way to get you started with pegboards and the additional accessories needed to start curating your board to your needs! Choose between different color options that will add a fun pop of color to your space if the classic white or clear isn’t as appealing an option. The bins are perfect for storing clips or your pin cushion white the hooks can hold everything from your tape measures to your favorite pairs of scissors! Get the set here!
Thread Racks
These racks are perfect for storing your spools of thread on display. The first (the large spool rack) is perfect to store your larger cones side-by-side for all of your serging and more industrial-sewing needs. Tend to stick to smaller spools like Gütermann or Coats & Clark? The smaller, standard spool rack is another must-have! Both are easily mountable on your wall or you can also simply display them easel-like with the fold-out legs. Natural wood not your forte? This is a paint-friendly option that you can customize with your favorite colors! Get the Large Spool (perfect for cones) here! Get the Small Spool (perfect for standard spools) here!
Thread Bin
This is another great option for storing thread, particularly if you don’t have the counter space to display the thread racks or can’t attach them to the wall. This is also a good option to have on-hand if you find yourself not using colors as frequently and don’t want to display them but also don’t want to just throw them in a random bag or box somewhere. Perfect for traveling, especially if you head to some in-person classes at your local sewing shop, get it here!
Ironing Caddy
This is a must-have for anyone, in my opinion. Throw it on over a free door and store your favorite iron and ironing board for easy access when you have to spend the day pressing! This model will store both T-Leg and 4 Leg ironing boards and most iron sizes and styles. Get it here!
Organizational Furniture
Anytime I can find storage furniture, I grab it! Not only does it usually add another surface to throw some of my things onto but it also helps me keep things more and more organized. This Storage Cabinet from Winsome Wood features a number of drawers perfect for storing your ribbons and elastics while the side cabinet (with its adjustable shelf) is perfect for stashing some of your fabric or even your printed patterns! Get the Storage Cabinet here!
Looking for a smaller alternative? This 4-Sided Organization Cube packs a huge punch! With a number of adjustable shelves, thread spindles, and rods perfect for holding onto your ribbons and more, this is a great piece to add to a smaller space, especially for holding onto those threads and scissors in case you can’t get some pegboard on the walls!
