Saturday Skirt Set

Chelsea over at Friday Pattern has done it again! If you’re like me and went crazy over the Saguaro Set that she released in March of 2022, you’ll love this new skirt set that she released just in time for the holidays!

I wanted to make sure I made myself a coordinating set so that I was able to mix and match the pieces individually with other items in my closet. Part of my aims in 2023 is to make more items that I know I’ll wear regularly (or that a loved one will) so that I’m not simply making a new fancy outfit for special occasions only for it to go into the closet and never be worn again. For this test, I opted to use some of my always-on-hand bleached muslin to make the top and some leftover deadstock crepe that I made one of my most-worn pieces with since I knew if the top didn’t work out the way I wanted it to then I wouldn’t be “losing” fabric.

To be completely honest, I was a little hesitant when it came to the top of this set especially just because I was a little worried with how it would lay on my body. I was a little more cautious since it’s been a while since I’ve made anything with a collar but Chelsea’s instructions made this a breeze! I love the clean collared style and the versatility on how you can wear this top (tied in the front vs tied in the back as more of a traditional wrap style). After making this up, I couldn’t be happier in choosing a white woven fabric for this top. While a classic white button up is on most people’s list of must-haves in their closet, I’ve found over the years that the style and fit is usually terrible on me with gaping holes between buttons. This top is the perfect way of getting that classic style but with a trendier silhouette thanks to the cropped length, lower neckline, and voluminous sleeves!

When it came to the skirt, I used some leftover deadstock giraffe printed crepe that I had purchased from Blackbird Fabrics a few years ago. It’s a simple and easy style to throw together as I finished it in maybe 2 hours complete with a couple of fit checks and a handful of smaller alterations. The smaller alterations are tightening the length of the elastic in the back waistband (I cut mine too loose initially so it was falling off my waist) and shortening the skirt length to be more of a tea length. I knew I’d get a lot more use out of a shorter skirt!

One thing I love about pattern sets is the amount of use you can get out of them. By taking the Saturday Skirt Set and 4 additional styles I had in my closet (a pair of booties, some bootcut jeans, a black t-shirt, and my faux leather jacket), I managed to mix and match the skirt set up in 12 different outfits! Not bad for 6 articles of clothing!

As I sit here writing this, I’m already racking my brain trying to figure out the next version I want to make…Though Paige’s velvet version (*heart eyes*) definitely has me thinking…
