New Pattern Test: The Nia Dress!

The second I saw this dress pop up in my Facebook feed (I’m in a number of plus size sewing groups) with a call for pattern testers, I knew that it would be the perfect versatile dress for date night and some of the other occasions I have coming up this year!

When it comes to pattern testing now, the quicker the sew, the better it is for me to be able to commit. Between working a full time job, freelancing with my tech illustration work (Side Note: If you or anyone you know is looking for some extra help with illustrations or branding help for their sewing patterns, or even interested in having someone pattern test for larger sizes, please send them my way!), helping plan my brother and sister-in-law’s wedding and accompanying festivities, working on #taggedbySteph (my upcoming satin label business!!) as well as a couple of vacations here and there, it’s been a bit more difficult to find much free time anymore.

That said, I’m so, so happy that I signed up for this pattern test! The second I saw it, I thought the cap sleeve version would be perfect to throw on for date night with the boyfriend and it came along just in time for Easter (sadly I couldn’t finish it in time for the occasion).

When choosing the version I wanted to go with, I wanted the cap sleeves for that extra bit of comfort I find with wider straps/shorter sleeves. Choosing the length was easy as I fell in love with the technical drawing depicting the accent hem so I decided on the mini length so it didn’t go down too far. Thankfully, the pattern wasn’t too many pieces so I was able to put the pattern together and cut it out in the span of about an hour (yes, that includes being distracted by Food Network running in the background).

The fabric I used was a sage Swiss dot jersey that I purchased from So Sew English fabrics at the start of the year. This is such a comfortable and classic style! The Swiss dot texture is the perfect added texture to change up an otherwise basic jersey.

I’m looking forward to making a few more versions, especially after seeing all of the other ladies’ versions! I think it’s time to try a spaghetti strap version…
